World Machine · Experimental macOS project

A world that keeps going.

Leave it. Come back to the news. macOS pre-alpha.

Tiny Society on day 21 at noon, drawn with hand-inked outlines: gauges for work, money in town and spirits, four houses and a shop above the harbour with two staked plots, and a card saying chapter 2, The year of the great storm, has ended. Captured from the app running in its Linux preview.

Not only a harbour.

Pocket Universe settles Ares, Maple Street in 1987, or Icebridge, each drawn as itself.

Pocket Universe on Ares, sol 180: habitat modules and domes on red regolith under a butterscotch sky, gauges for trust, tension and stores, and colonists talking by the solar panel. Captured from the app running in its Linux preview.

Moments become panels.

Weddings, births and farewells, drawn before, during and after.

A moment in Tiny Society on day 360: a three-panel strip titled Rosa settles for good, captioned before, during and after, over the harbour. Captured from the app running in its Linux preview.

At night, pages are paper under a lamp.

In the light appearance. Gauges and buttons stay as dark as the sky.

Tiny Society at night in spring: lit windows under a starry sky, the gauges and zoom buttons dark to match, while the drawer listing the new pier and a lamp on the point, and Evan's card offering a pier for timber, are warm paper. Captured from the app running in its Linux preview.

Live in it, or leave it.

Lives with an arc

People are born, grow up, grow old and die.

Build on plots

What you build decides who moves in.

Designs and names

Paint a flag or a sail; name boats and babies.

Talk with a goal

Someone asks a favour; you do it by talking.

Three languages

Interface, stories and talk in English, Chinese or Japanese.

Agent-ready

Pi, your own key, or this Mac's model can voice it.

Where your data goes.

  • Your Worlds are files on your Mac; there is no account or telemetry, and nothing is uploaded.
  • Once per launch, the app asks api.github.com for the latest release.
  • World voice is off by default; with your API key, it sends only that World's facts and your words to api.anthropic.com.

FAQ

Is it stable?

No. World Machine is an experimental pre-alpha. v0.26 opens and plays on Worlds saved by v0.20 to v0.25, but a World saved by an older Pack version may not open; nothing is deleted, and the file keeps its whole history. Each save keeps the previous one as <name>.world.bak, and a file written by a newer app opens read-only and is never saved over.

How do I open it the first time?

Download the DMG from the Releases page and drag World Machine onto Applications; it runs on Apple Silicon or Intel. Builds are not notarized, so the first launch needs a one-time Open Anyway step, described in the install guide.

Is there a free demo?

Yes. World Machine Demo, on the same Releases page, is the first hour of Tiny Society, up to day 21. Your harbour stays in My Worlds, and the full app opens it and carries on.

How far does a World move while I am away?

One period for every six hours you were away, at most 28 periods (a week) per return. The return briefing says how many.

What does World voice do?

When you turn it on in Settings, a model words what happened while you were away and answers for the people you talk to. It can be a local program such as Pi, your own API key, or this Mac's own model, which has not yet been run on a Mac. The model only proposes: checks refuse some answers outright, and a judge (Claude Haiku 4.5 by default, this Mac's model, or off) gives a second opinion on the rest. Some bad answers still get through, and a declined one is replaced by the World's own words. Your API key stays in your login keychain and is never handed to a Pack, Pi runs with no tools, extensions or session, and every verdict is recorded, so replaying a World never asks a model again.

Do people understand everything I type?

Not everything. Without World voice, people hear 28 kinds of everyday talk in English and Chinese, and about 110 everyday phrases in Japanese; some new phrasing is missed.

Can I add other World Packs?

Yes. The app activates its included Packs on first launch; any other .worldpack runs only after you review its executable identity and SHA-256.
